Laser jet printers dont utilize the typical compact ink cartridges that you find in the Ink Jet printers. They use a toner cartridge. A toner cartridge is not really ink. It employs a technology that heats the magnetic particles and binds it to the page with a charge. This enables for much faster printing and less chance of smearing when the pages come out of the printer. This also allows for a much larger reservoir of particles so you can print additional pages than you would on a typical ink jet printer.
The prices of laser jet printers have come down dramatically in the last few years. You can now get an excellent HP Laser Printer without color for about $100 compared to a good ink jet printer without color for around $75. These statistics are assuming you are printing text and not graphics. When you break the numbers down you will notice that it will cost you much more to work with an inkjet printer than a laser jet printer. The starting price will be higher for the laser printer but the total savings in terms of money and time will be substantial.
There are also laser jet printers that print in color using the same process as the laser jet printers that only print in black. These are more expensive but for the same reasons mentioned previously they will save you both time and money in the years to come. Its time to get rid of that old ink jet printer and obtain yourself one of the new laser jet printers.
